Social Plant Dieta
A Modern Evolution of an Ancient Shipibo Tradition
What is a diet?
A Plant Dieta is a sacred healing practice rooted in the Amazonian traditions of the Shipibo-Conibo people. The dieta is a disciplined and intentional process of entering into relationship with the spirit of a master plant. Through this communion, the plant becomes a teacher, healer, and guide. In a traditional Shipibo dieta, participants follow strict protocols: no salt, no sugar, no sexual activity, no drugs or alcohol, and no external stimulation. Food is simple and minimal—limited to green plantains, rice, and fish—while the focus turns inward. Physical and social isolation, long periods of solitude, and fasting from sensory input create a space where deep energetic and spiritual communication can occur.
There are also social dietas, which allow for integration with everyday life. In these cases, one continues to work and interact socially, while still maintaining the integrity of the dieta through boundaries, awareness, and adherence to the core protocols. These dietas offer a bridge between the traditional form and modern life, supporting ongoing healing and spiritual development.
Whether done in isolation or within daily life, a plant dieta is a powerful tool for transformation—an invitation to slow down, connect with the unseen, and allow the spirit of nature to teach and guide us from within.
